Mechanical, Electrical + Structural Engineering
We collaborate across key specialty areas, providing start-to-finish problem-solving strategies founded in smart policy, innovative research and practical engineering.
Smart Policy, Innovative Research + Practical Engineering
For over four decades, our expert engineering services have included structural, mechanical, and electrical analysis and design. We are recognized leaders in extreme external hazard consulting, providing tornado and seismic analysis and design. Additionally, we are at the forefront of developing and applying advanced analytical methods for aircraft impact analysis. Our forensic services also allow us to perform structural safety assessments, investigate mechanical failures, and determine the extent of damage and necessary repairs after a fire event.
Structural Design
Structural design is the cornerstone of any project, whether new or existing construction. Our structural engineers have vast experience in design and analysis of steel, concrete, and masonry structures and are knowledgeable in advanced 3D analysis techniques when needed to solve difficult problems. We provide structural evaluation and risk insights to properly assess site configurations for tower cranes, mobile cranes and other heavy lift equipment. Because seismic and other extreme hazard loading conditions may require advanced analysis, our engineers are well versed in the usage of finite element software along with advanced techniques to determine how a structure responds and behaves to extreme hazard loading.
Structural, Seismic + Vibration Services for the Power Industry
Our engineers routinely work with architects, structural engineers, and building owners to develop unique solutions to ensure structures are adequately protected from fire. This frequently involves developing design solutions that are beyond the building code standard requirements, allowing more flexibility in the design while maintaining collapse prevention for fire life safety.
- Concrete and steel structure design
- AISC, ACI, and ASCE 7 and 43 code design
- Safety related and non-safety structural design and analysis
- ISFSI design, analysis, and review
- Design for extreme load
- Seismic equipment qualification services
Mechanical Design
Mechanical systems are responsible for maintaining a safe and comfortable environment for building occupants and responsible for many industrial processes that take place. Whether your project involves a failure analysis of a mechanical component, engineering a new dust collection system or designing new components for hydraulic, piping, or HVAC design, our engineers provide solutions that are safe, reliable and complies with the relevant legislation. We also provide a full range of services for water hammer and surge analysis of pipe flow systems.
Mechanical Engineering + Design Services for the Power Industry
Our team has provided expert mechanical engineering analysis and design services to the commercial nuclear power industry for decades. We have extensive experience in all aspects of piping system code reconciliation, design and analysis. We offer a wide range of additional mechanical engineering consulting services including forensics, mechanical systems failure analysis, and incident reconstruction. In addition, we provide vibration testing, evaluation, and mitigation services and have a wide range of capabilities in mechanical equipment qualification for extreme load and vibration.
Electrical Design
Our engineers provide a wide range of electrical power system design and analysis services including primary electrical distribution power flow, voltage drop, short circuit, arc flash, control systems and system efficiency. We also routinely design emergency power systems including emergency/stand-by generator and uninterruptible power source for various project types. Our team has completed numerous DoD projects relating to electrical power system analysis, electrical design, electrical design specifications and standards.
Code Consulting + Compliance Reviews
It's important that the architectural, electrical and structural systems are maintained to the current code guidelines and repaired if they are failing. Our structural and MEP code compliance assessments for any new construction or building modification include review of structural design, plumbing systems and fixtures, HVAC and electrical/mechanical systems and equipment. We balance the rigorous requirements of life safety and code compliance with practicality and aesthetic considerations.
- Provide insights and guidance for code applications
- Participate in code development as well as sub committees and working groups for various ASME and IEEE codes
- Perform refined analysis rooted in expert code knowledge
Building Science Forensic Services
Failures within the built environment can occur at any time for a variety of reasons. A deep understanding of all aspects of building design and construction, condition assessment & evaluation techniques, and the materials themselves is required to determine the root cause of a failure. We can help you assess architectural, civil, structural, electrical, fire protection, materials and mechanical issues pertaining to your building. Our large team of multi-disciplinary experts will provide you with root cause determination and tailor a cost-effective solution for your unique situation.
Leaders in the Industry
Actively Involved in Industry Codes and Standards
Our team is heavily involved in the industry consensus codes and standards process.
For 16 years, our staff served as consultants to the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB). In this role, staff members provided extensive reviews and consulting services in the mechanical and structural design of multiple facilities, and the application of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, AISC and ASCE Standards, and B31.3 and B31.1 Series Codes.
We are active participants in the following committees:
- ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Committees, Section III & Section VIII
- ASME Qualification of Mechanical Equipment Standard Committees
- ASME Non-Metallic Pressure Pipe Standard Committees
- ASME B31 Piping Code Committees
